Installation or inspection of carbon monoxide detectors

Carbon Monoxide, otherwise known as CO, is an invisible gas that can create illness or even death to those that are exposed. It is generated by burning fossil fuels in the home so proper venting to ensure this gas does not build up in the home is essential. You should make sure your home has a carbon monoxide detector as required by law. The professionals at Able Home Services are here to help you figure out if your home is properly protected from carbon monoxide buildup, and to guide in proper location and installation of carbon monoxide detectors.

Where Should You Place Carbon Monoxide Detectors?

Carbon monoxide detectors are crucial for safeguarding your home. Here’s where you should place them:

Near Sleeping Areas: Install a carbon monoxide detector near every bedroom and sleeping area. Ensure the alarm is loud enough to wake you up in case of danger.

If you’re getting a single detector, place it near your bedroom for maximum effectiveness. Position detectors 5-20 feet away from common sources of carbon monoxide, such as: Fuel-burning appliances (like furnaces or water heaters). Attached garages (where car exhaust can seep into the home). Fireplaces or any appliance that produces flames (like gas stoves). Height Placement: Carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air and tends to rise with warm air. Therefore, consider placing the detector: On a wall about five feet above the floor (where people breathe).

Alternatively, on the ceiling, about six inches from the wall. Remember, each floor of your home needs a separate carbon monoxide detector to ensure comprehensive safety.

How Do You Test A Carbon Monoxide Detector?

Having a carbon monoxide (CO) detector in your home is essential for safeguarding against this odorless, colorless gas. Regular testing ensures that your detector functions correctly. Follow these steps to keep your family safe:

1. Testing the CO Sensor with Canned CO Test Gas:

Purchase CO detector tester spray (available at most home improvement stores or online).

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using the test spray.

Enclose the CO detector and the spray nozzle in a plastic bag.

Spray the canned CO test spray for at least 3 seconds into the bag.

If your detector is working, it will sound the alarm within 15 minutes, detecting over 500 parts per million of carbon monoxide.

Remove the test bag and sprayer, allowing fresh air to fan the detector.

Repeat the CO spray test annually to ensure the sensor remains effective.

2. Testing the Alarm’s Circuitry:

Locate the test button on your detector (usually next to a flashing LED light).

Press and hold down the test button on the device.

You should hear two beeps, indicating that the detector has entered testing mode.

If you don’t hear any sound or if the alarm is weak, replace the battery and retest.

Remember, regular testing and maintenance are crucial for your carbon monoxide detector’s reliability. Stay vigilant and prioritize safety!
